Cognitive liberty, or the "right to mental self-determination", is the freedom of an individual to control his or her own mental processes, cognition, and consciousness. It has been argued to be both an extension of, and the principle underlying, the right to freedom of thought. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cognitive_liberty)
Cognitive liberty provides a direct engagement with the essence of what makes us human through our free will and the right to explore different states of consciousness or awareness.
When we are faced with state policies and cultural stigma that pretend to determine what an “appropriate” state of mind is and that turn some of this possibilities into crimes or illegal practices (illegal states of mind) we are faced with the necessity of questioning if we can really feel like we own our bodies, minds and experiences.
